MMSA is thrilled to collaborate with the Next Generation Science Exemplar (NGSX) national program of professional learning in designing and developing, “Building Capacity for Next Generation Science Teaching.” This professional learning pathway supports Maine educators as they design and implement three-dimensional learning experiences for all of Maine’s students. MMSA and NGSX are excited to be offering this pathway in partnership with the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Science Teachers Association, and Thomas College.
The curricular and pedagogical shifts called for by the authors of the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the NGSS are significant and require high-quality professional learning experiences situated in-, from-, and for- practice. Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance is offering a professional learning pathway aimed at preparing classroom teachers, instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and administrators to understand and implement the changes in science teaching and learning. In this pathway, participants will: (1) experience NGSS designed learning experiences; (2) analyze student artifacts and videos from NGSS designed learning experiences, (3) develop and modify NGSS designed instructional materials, (4) prepare for, implement, and reflect on NGSS designed lessons, and (5) engage in coaching focused on Next Generation Science Teaching. In addition to two in-person Institute days, there will be 12 two-hour virtual coaching sessions.
Participants may choose to attend the Institute Days only or the Institute plus virtual coaching sessions. Participants have the option of earning graduate course credit from Thomas College for successfully completing the Institute plus virtual coaching sessions.
Audience: Workshop is for teachers and instructional coaches
Institute Days: 16 hours, ideally scheduled for two full days, but could be flexibly scheduled
Virtual Coaching Sessions: Two hours weekly
Workshop is for K-12 educators, curriculum coordinators and coaches.
