Getting to Know OpenSciEd NGSS-Designed Middle School Curricula: Grades 6-8 Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science

WHO WILL BENEFIT:
  • Grades 6-8 Educators
  • Instructional Coaches
  • Administrators
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Be introduced to the middle school NGSS-designed OpenSciEd Units.
  • Become familiar with free tools and resources including existing instructional resources, available for NGSS implementation support.
  • Become familiar with the shifts in the Next Generation Science Standards and how to successfully enact NGSS-designed materials.
  • Enhance your own understanding of the science content and pedagogical strategies in each unit to better support students’ classroom engagement and 3-dimensional learning.
DETAILS: OpenSciEd was launched to improve the supply of and address demand for high-quality, open-source, full-course science instructional materials, while at the same time supporting the implementation of middle school science instructional units.

OpenSciEd aims to create a set of exemplary science instructional materials that are:

  1. Designed and aligned to the Framework and NGSS;
  2. based on research regarding how students learn, what motivates learning, and the implications for teaching;
  3. developed with educators and extensively tested by teachers and schools;
  4. designed to be used with low-cost, standard laboratory equipment and materials amenable to large-scale deployment; and
  5. improved over time based on feedback from teachers and field-testing.

While starting at the middle school level, the goal is to create an entire science curriculum from elementary to high school. This workshop will introduce middle school science teachers to the OpenSciEd framework and to the first set of middle school units.
