Teachers have been trying for years to find something better than “kill and drill” in their classroom. Teacher-centered practices where all students are expected to do the same old thing through rote procedures are not effectively preparing our students for the future. Planning and leading more student-centered activities will increase student understanding by allowing them to become “math thinkers.” This workshop will dive into ways for teachers to implement the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice, and participants will see examples of these practices in action. This workshop will focus on the Eight Mathematical Practices that are embedded throughout math content from K-12. The eight Standards for Mathematical Practice are:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
- Model with mathematics
- Use appropriate tools strategically
- Attend to precision
- Look for and make use of structure
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
Participants will leave this workshop with an understanding of what the Standards for Mathematical Practice are, and how they can effectively incorporate them into their teaching.
