What is your teaching/learning philosophy: I believe in project-based, hands-on learning.

What is your STEM passion area: Computer Science is my passion area. Creating something that could potentially reach thousands of people is an amazing feeling.

What do you like most about your role at MMSA: The variety of projects I can be involved in and the amazing staff

What did you do before you worked at MMSA: I was a STEM educator, a school Computer Science Coordinator, a freelance web/software developer, and cooperate forms designer

What do you like to do in your free time: dancing, martial arts, volleyball, art

Nate’s Bio: Nate Vlahakis joined Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance in August of 2021 as a STEM Computer Science Education Specialist. He is a graduate of the University of Maine, where he earned Bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science. Prior to joining MMSA, he was on the Design and Implementation team of a nationally recognized tech company.

Nate is a certified 7-12 mathematics educator with over ten years of various teaching experience. He has taught middle school, high school, and adult education in both public and private settings. He was most recently employed at one of Maine’s first charter schools as a Computer Science Coordinator and STEM teacher. Nate’s focus is on developing and implementing hands-on, project based learning experiences.

Since graduating college, Nate has also been involved in freelance software and web development. Several of his applications are currently being utilized in Maine schools. In his free time, Nate enjoys hiking, traveling, martial arts, and dancing.
