The MIT Alumni Club of Maine invites Maine middle school and high school science, engineering, and math teachers to apply for a Club scholarship to the MIT Science and Engineering Program for Teachers (SEPT) July 5 – July 11, 2020.
SEPT is a one-week residential program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. The teachers stay in MIT dormitory rooms overnight. The purpose of the program is to extend the ability of middle school and high school teachers to engage their students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curricula. The program consists of a broad update on cutting-edge science and engineering topics, with hands-on laboratory sessions organized around science and technology teaching tools that can be brought back to the classroom. Participating teachers can choose among three tracks: how to broaden the range of students interested in STEM subjects, how to bring project-based learning into STEM classrooms, and how to use games and simulations in the classroom. Completion of the program results in four continuing-education credits.
SEPT is now in its 31st year, and it has an excellent reputation among the teachers who have participated in the program. This year it runs from July 5th through July 11th. A more-complete description can be found on MIT’s SEPT website at https://sept.mit.edu.
The MIT Alumni Club of Maine is a professional association of MIT alumni who reside in Maine. A key part of the Club’s mission is to promote science and engineering literacy among Maine middle school and high school students, and to encourage students to consider science and engineering professions. The MIT Club is offering a scholarship covering MIT’s fee for the program ($1600), which includes tuition, dorm room, and a meals allowance, to teachers who are interested in participating in SEPT this summer.
To apply for a Club scholarship, please download the SEPT application from the “How to Apply” page on the SEPT website (https://sept.mit.edu), and submit the completed application to the Club (not to MIT) by emailing it to jgibbons@alum.mit.edu by February 26th. The scholarship award will be made to the selected applicant by February 28th.
