On June 28th, 2024 the MMSA math, science, and informal education teams came together to host the first Science and Math Outdoors Workshop at the Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick.

The workshop was part of the Teach ME Outside project, and highlighted lesson plans that were created with math and science standards in mind, while also encouraging educators to investigate natural phenomena outdoors using the two subjects.

MMSA staff members, as well as an advisory group of Maine educators, crafted the seven lesson plans for grades K-6. During the workshop, educators came together to forge stronger links between math and science curricula and the outdoors while fostering students’ appreciation for real-world context.

Participants reflected on  the impact of workshop:

“Not only are we integrating science and math, but we’re doing it in and with nature. I don’t think it could get much better than that.”

“It was excellent!  I feel excited about using the resources and eventually creating my own lessons with more confidence.”
