Math Consulting: Year in Review

Wide-Ranging Impacts for Maine Math Instruction

The Math Consulting team at MMSA was consistently on the road this year, visiting schools for professional learning, coaching, and technical assistance. The geographical span (across the state), grade-level span (PreK-12th grade), and content span (from math fluency, to curriculum review, to Thinking Classrooms) have a vast impact.

Since August 2023, about 30 administrators and educators, with representatives from each school in the district, have participated in a year-long Professional Learning Series facilitated by one of the math consultants.

Educators and administrators are reading and actively reflecting on the practices shared in the game-changing book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. In the monthly after-school training, all participants engage in math tasks, reflect on how to apply the practices in their classrooms, and collaborate within grade span teams and across grade levels. The sessions have been filled with rich, thought-provoking conversations, and educators are already making pedagogical changes based on their new learning.
