Teaching and Learning Flourishes Outdoors
Teach ME Outside Professional Learning in 2023
In 2023, Teach ME Outside held workshops all across the state from York County to Aroostook County, impacting over 100 educators, and focusing on strategies for building a culture of teaching outside and best practices in science teaching for environmental learning projects. Educators highly valued the opportunity to connect with each other in their region, gain ideas for resources/grants/strategies for outdoor and environmental learning, and workshop their goals for the future. One participant stated, “The resources will be helpful, but getting a chance to brainstorm outdoor learning with one of my colleagues and teachers from nearby schools was incredible! It was great to hear what others have done, imagine how we could collaborate, and consider what would be possible at my school.”

The 2022 Census of Community-Based Outdoor and Environmental Learning in Maine survey initiative, led by Teach ME Outside, captured data from 920 in-school and out-of-school educators, administrators, and leaders about the state of environmental education across Maine, nearly double the response rate from the 2019 survey. Save the date for a public release of the final report and case study highlights of projects across Maine and a celebration of our state’s outdoor and environmental learning successes on February 27 in the Hall of Flags at the Maine State House in Augusta.
