$1,299,377 in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) has been granted to MMSA for a new project called Rural Energy Futures (REF).

According to joint press releases from Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, “This funding will help prepare the next generation of Maine students for future careers in critical STEM industries, particularly the energy sector.”

MMSA Executive Director, Dr. Ruth Kermish-Allen, who is a co-primary investigator on the project along with Hannah Lakin and Heidi Cian, describes the project as building “community strength around novel technologies and futures.”

MMSA will be joined by the Roux Institute at Northeastern University, the Governor’s Energy Office, in undertaking the project, which will involve 48 teachers, 720 students, and 12 rural middle schools across Maine.
