On Sept 13-14 the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance led a conference in Washington DC on the topic of out-of-school STEM learning in rural places.
The conference was the first of its kind to bring together about 30 innovators and experts in rural STEM learning that happens outside of school; these were people who organize festivals, run citizen science programs, staff science centers, work in libraries, etc.
group shared lessons learned from their work in rural communities encouraging youth and adults to learn about STEM topics in exciting ways. They discussed how rural communities are defined, how to provide STEM opportunities equitably across very diverse rural regions, and how to measure impacts of their programs.
