Bridging your classroom to real-world STEM happening across Maine

Maine-Bridge gives middle and high school STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) educators the opportunity to step directly into the world of real scientific research. Over the course of a two-week summer externship, teachers work alongside Maine scientists to tour research facilities, practice using research equipment and analysis software, and gain an insider’s view of the cutting-edge research happening across the state.

During the program, teachers work with a supportive cohort and MMSA education specialists to turn research experiences into engaging learning for students. Participants build skills in data collection, analysis, and scientific communication while developing curriculum that strengthens students’ understanding of STEM principals and pathways.

Maine-Bridge Teacher Participation Includes:

  • A June Kickoff Event to meet your cohort and prepare for your research placement
  • A flexible two-week externship throughout July and/or August, working directly with scientists
  • A fall weekend Writing Retreat to collaboratively build lessons, labs, and classroom activities grounded in your summer research

By expanding access to authentic, research-based STEM learning, Maine-Bridge helps broaden participation in STEM fields and empowers teachers to spark curiosity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of science in their students.

Experience Examples

Past Maine-Bridge participants have deployed oceanic research buoys, sampled eDNA and soil carbon, investigated early-stage cancer cells in the lab, explored the use of AI to map forests, and collected phytoplankton and zooplankton samples. Teachers used these experiences to design immersive labs, hands-on projects, and phenomena-based units that bring real Maine science into their classrooms.
