The Maine Artificial Intelligence Task Force, created by executive order of Governor Janet Mills on December 20, 2024, will include MMSA’s Dr. Ruth Kermish-Allen as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee.

The task force, which comprises 21 total members coming from employers, government entities, educational institutions, and advocacy groups, met for the first time in January and began setting the stage for the months ahead. Among the members is Andrew Butcher, President of the Maine Connectivity Authority, Pender Makin, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Education, and Brian Whitney, President of the Maine Technology Institute.

According to a news release from the Governor’s Office, “The Task Force will engage with communities, industries, and organizations to understand AI’s policy implications for Maine’s economy and workforce, regulatory and legislative actions required to protect Mainers from the risks AI presents, and opportunities to harness these powerful new technologies to improve public-sector service delivery.”

“This is an important opportunity to explore AI’s impact on our economy, workforce, and communities—and to shape policies that ensure Maine is prepared for both the opportunities and challenges ahead—especially those that emerge in the classroom,” Kermish-Allen said.

MMSA, a leader in STEM education, recently co-hosted the first Maine Computer Science Education Summit, which convened educators, industry leaders, and policymakers to make recommendations and set goals to improve computer science readiness in Maine.
