Beyond Keywords: Helping Kids Think Through Word Problems
Monday, November 2, 2026 | 12:30–1:30 PM ET | Virtual
Word problems don’t have to feel intimidating.
In this free, live virtual workshop, afterschool and out-of-school educators will explore hands-on strategies that help young people move beyond searching for keywords and instead understand what a math problem is actually asking.
Participants will consider ways to reduce the mental load of word problems, help youth make connections between the situation and the mathematics, and support more confident problem-solving. You’ll leave with practical approaches you can use in your own program.
About the Series
This workshop is part of Math Workshops for Afterschool Educators, a four-part virtual series from ACRES & MMSA through STEM Next. Each one-hour session explores practical ways to engage young people in mathematics beyond homework help.
Educators may register for one workshop or any combination of workshops in the series.
